FAQs
Our FAQs page will answer your questions about the JORVIK VIking Festival so you can get the most out of your visit.
Who runs the JORVIK Viking Festival?
Registered charity, York Archaeology is responsible for the JORVIK Viking Festival. We are also supported by a number of highly skilled contractors, organisations, and individuals who without, we wouldn’t make the Festival happen. York Archaeology is also responsible for the JORVIK Viking Centre, DIG, and Barley Hall. York Archaeology also provides a comprehensive range of archaeological services across the country and worked on the Coppergate Dig itself.
What is the JORVIK Viking Festival?
A celebration of all things Viking. We have a huge range of events, spanning over a full week which build up the overall festival experience. From the free Viking encampment hosting family friendly storytelling and demonstrations, to Viking Banquets and Spectacular Battles, there’s something in the programme for all ages, experts and novices alike.
Do I need a ticket?
It depends on the event, so have a good look through the ‘What’s On’ page to get more information. A number of our events are free and unticketed, but some do require you to book in advance. Some, like the Crafting Workshops, Mead tasting and RPG events sell out rather quickly, so make sure to snap up a ticket fast!
Are tickets refundable?
Our tickets are non-refundable. However, if you are attending an event that is included in the price of an attraction (such as Poo Week or Kids’ Crafting) and are unable to visit during your pre-booked time slot, we can rebook your visit for a more convenient time.

Is there a single ticket covering the whole Festival?
No. As much of the JORVIK Viking Festival takes place across multiple venues, with some events designed for families, and some for 18 years and older, all events are ticketed separately.
Can I attend both the March to Coppergate and The Viking Games?
Yes — you are very welcome to attend both events. They now take place at different times, making it easier to enjoy each one.
Please note that entry to the Viking Games is ticketed, and all attendees will need a valid ticket.
While the Viking Games will feature combat displays and skirmishes, the large reenactment battle will not take place during this event. Instead, the main battle will take place after the March to Coppergate, starting at 15:00.
Can I attend both the March to Coppergate and The Battle for York?
Yes! The Battle for York begins about 20 minutes after the March concludes at Coppergate. Everyone with a valid ticket will be allowed entry to the Eye of York, including late arrivals.
Important update from last year: Any re-enactors who aren’t marching as part of the following groups: Regia Anglorum, The Vikings, Jofor’s Hall; will be categorised as ‘Independants’. All independants are permitted to join the march but will need to purchase a valid ticket to be permitted to enter the Battle for York. Any independents will be refused entry to the Battle for York if they do not hold a valid ticket
If I join the March, can I take part in the Battle for York?
If you are not part of one of our affiliated re-enactment groups (Regia Anglorum, The Vikings, Jofor’s Hall), for insurance reasons, you will not be permitted to take part in the Battle for York. You will also need to purchase a ticket for the Battle for York in order to watch the battle take place. Strict checks will be in place to ensure that no unauthorised persons get onto the battlefield.
