At JORVIK Viking Festival, we are always looking for ways to make our events as environmentally friendly as possible.

Here are some of the ways that we endeavour to be sustainable…

Sourcing products and suppliers

We aim to use local and environmentally-friendly suppliers as much as possible, and we encourage our suppliers to examine the sustainability of their own processes.

Encouraging recycling and using recyclable materials

For the 2020 Festival, recycling bins will be available throughout our Viking Encampment.

Our Festival programmes are printed using the Carbon Balancing scheme, whereby the carbon production of creating the paper is offset by protecting sustainable forestry. The Carbon Balancing scheme supports an on-going REDD project (‘reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation’) in an area of ecologically important forestry that otherwise would be under threat of clearance and natural degradation. The project’s conservation and protection activities measurably increases the area’s absorption rates of atmospheric carbon emissions.

Our printed materials will remind visitors to recycle them after use.

For new signage and event materials, we are aiming to use only recyclable materials.

The Festival bar will use recyclable glasses and avoid single-use plastics.

Being an environmentally-conscious team

All Festival staff are encouraged to be environmentally-conscious in their daily work, including turning off lights and computers; adjusting radiator settings appropriate to the weather; using appropriate recycling opportunities in the workplace; minimising food packaging and food waste; using public transport, bikes or walking to work; and encouraging colleagues and suppliers to embrace these commitments.

We know that reducing our environmental impact is important to our visitors, our staff, and our city. There is always room for improvement, and we will continue to look for ways to be more sustainable. If you have any suggestions or recommendations of eco-friendly suppliers, please contact us at
